The TSGT James Quincy Adams first hand account of the B29 and MiG dogfights over the Yalu River.

...
(JQ pictured left in photo 1, right in photo 2 with fellow crew members and mascot)

Adams' account of these events was requested by interested staff in Washington...

The following information provided by Marvin King:

The plane was part of a large 3 Wing formation aimed at destroying railway bridges across the Yalu river to China, the 19th BG (Bomb Group, aka Bomb Wing), 98th BG, and 307th BG (our group.) Our plane was in the 371st Bomber Squadron, under the 307th Bomb Group. The plane serial number was 44-62252, a WWII era B-29 of the 371st Bomb Squadron, 307th Bomb Group out of Kadena. It was on a daylight mission to hit the railway bridges at Sinuiju that connect North Korea with China. Our B-29 had some engine trouble (from age and overuse) causing it to slow down. Rather than force its own group to slow down, it dropped from the last spot of the 2nd group back to become the Lead plane of the next group (the 22nd Bomber Squadron). It was during this brief, unfortunate window that the MiG 15's attacked. Finding a lone B-29 all by itself, between the two groups, it was hammered on and shot up badly.
The plane crashed in Suwan, South Korea.

The guys from the back of the plane that bailed out that day:

- William "Bill" Hanneman (Left gunner who was a replacement on that flight)
- Henry "Hank" Metz (CFC gunner who was a B-17 gunner who was shot down in WWII and held in a German POW camp)
- Daniel Oldewage (Tail Gunner)
- Marvin King (Right gunner)
- Lt. (?) Electronics Countermeasure Officer
- Cpl. Joe Hearn (Electronics Communications non-flying ground crewman who was NOT scheduled to be on the flight but got permission to fly as part of training -but -really just wanted to fly for the combat pay)
- Cpl. Leonard Maury (a non-flying ground crewman who had never been up in a B-29 was given the chance to fly 'for fun which was a bad idea' according to Mr. Oldewage)

The crew from the front of the plane:

- TSGT. James Q Adams (Radio Operator and last man to bail out)
- The Plane Commander was James "Champ" Chenault
- The Navigator (information needed- we believe that he is pictured in the second photograph)

Story and audio recordings of James Q Adams' account of the mission, his injuries and journey while in country coming soon...
